Glad to see that The Ultimate Nightmare of Wizards of the Coast® Customer Service is still going strong.

There's an easy formula for determining how much mana to spend on Fireball:
(Damage to inflict on each target + 1) * Number of targets

Just make sure you're spending at least 1 red mana to cast it, but that's pretty obvious.

Rock Slide is better as it's an instant and multiple targets don't cost extra mana.

@mikeygaw

This is true if your opponent's creatures are attacking/blocking.
And is true if you want damage only to creatures.
I think this is superior only because it's got more versatitlity.
Sometimes I like dealing 5 damage to a player, rather than 5 damage to 5 or less creatures.

Would this destroy Ice Cage if 0 (zero) was spent?

@ xRockFan:

Technically yes. You spend XR, where X is 0 and Fireball technically deals 0 damage to a target creature. The trigger that destroys Ice Cage actually makes Ice Cage die before your 1 mana Fireball even resolves. Another way to kill that aura is to equip something. Yes, you can equip things to creatures enchanted with ice cage. Equipping is an activated ability with a target that can only be used as a sorcery. Best thing to equip: Lightning Greaves.

The most tasteful way to end any infinite mana combo.

Fireball's nice, but it suffers from the Drain Life problem: an awesome name squandered by an awkward implementation. Admittedly it's not nearly as bad at this as Drain Life was, but that extra-cost rider continues to confuse nearly everyone and the card's power level would still be perfectly acceptable without it.

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be any name to fire the imagination like "Fireball", so it's not likely we'll be seeing its version of Consume Spirit any time soon.

I always leave a fireball in a red deck. So useful when dealing with pesky opponents who just had to keep on living.
