It's because people see him as vulnerable 3 card draw. Far as I'm considered though, whether he's better or worse can really depend on the game and what you have to combo with him

He gains +2 Loyalty counters for his 1st rank power. Meaning that on his 3rd turn of being on the table, he can pump out his 'king hit'. He's on the board no later than turn 3, meaning that his 3rd rank power happens on turn 6. You either use it to hurt them so you have a card advantage, OR, if you run something like Blue/Black/Green and have Liliana also, all kinds of hurt can occur. If you're running heavy green creatures and drop a 1/3 of your (60 card) deck into your graveyard and pop Liliana's 3rd rank power, you are very swiftly going to be visiting worlds of hurt on your opponents. And that's just one example. We haven't even gotten started on Polymorph or Makeshift Mannequin...

Before I leave my review, I feel the need to address some issues with previous comments.
1. Vulnerable Dragek? No more so than Garruk Wildspeaker or Ajani Vengeant; and neither of those planeswalkers are in the color of counterspells.
2. Really Iiory, did you even read the rules for planeswalkers? Not for seven rounds, until round seven. His first ability gives him +2 Loyalty which is more than many other planeswalkers can boast. Why are you so upset about giving your opponent a card? At the very worst it's card advantage neutral, but if you are playing Jace in the type of deck he was made for, then that is just one less card you have to shave off the top to win. Blue isn't dead, this is the spirit of blue, out-thinking less clever opponents.
3. PsionicFox, your math is slightly off. assuming you play Jace on turn 3, you cannot activate his third ability until turn 7, assuming that is that Jace hasn't come under fire. You also seem to have left out the primary strategy for which Jace was designed: killing by milling.
4. JackP, calling him the worst planeswalker is a subjective assessment at best. You can't compare the planeswalkers like that because they all do different things. Comparing planeswalkers of different colors and strategies isn't right, it isn't wrong, it's not even wrong. You just cannot measure them against each other objectively.
With that out of the way, I just want to say that Jace is one of my favorite planeswalkers because he falls in the color most near to my heart and begs an offbeat rogue deck that most players wouldn't ever touch for fear that it won't win often enough to feed their petty egos. But it would be FUN, you know, fun right? The entire point of the GAME. Not winning, but having fun.
However, I'm not terribly fond of planeswalkers, aside from Garruck, they all take to long or cost too much for my tastes. Jace is a good card, but there are better, faster, stronger ways to do the same thing. 4/5

He is just a great draw engine that is good in almost any blue deck. He has the lowest casting cost and can go up to 5 loyalty right away. Then you double draw for 5 turns, and leave you counter mana open! If he is attacked for say 3 the next turn you can still pull out another card or 2. 3 Mana for a cycle effect at worst! Awesome synergy with Liliana making their weak +1s into a great advantage. 4/5 as I don't like his ultimate it should have been a time twister or time walk.

I don't see planeswalkers as being played for their last ability. In my opinion, your lucky if your opponent doesn't draw something that can discard/destroy, or simply attack your planeswalker. It is definetly possible to use that last powerful ability, but if you want to play one its best to focus on the first things they do and decide whether thats worth it to you, and if they get enough loyalty points for that big ability then even better. For me, this is why I use jace, hes a re-usable card draw for 3, which is no different than playing a sorcery. You can use his 2 first powers in cycles to draw lots of cards without giving more to your opponent as well. He works better for me personally maybe because I also play cards that cause my opponent to discard from their hand, so they might be discarding the same things I just allowed them to draw. Occassionally I can keep jace out long enough to play his last ability, at which point my opponent has just lost a 1/3rd of their decks power (or at least if you play with 60 card decks which we do). To mill I assume he would be played with Ambassador Laquatus, but I'm not a big fan of the mill strategy. It can take forever, and certain cards just destroy it such as Guile because it never stays in the graveyard. Other cards that really kill mill decks are Repopulate and Thran foundry. Not to mention your opponent gets the hint when you start milling their cards or play cards aimed at doing that while not focusing on other things on the field. Lastly, its just not that fun a way to win/lose, you don't actually beat their deck you simply force them to run out of cards, and the opponent never gets to play any of them.

I personally think Jace is the best of the planeswalkers followed by Chandra and Liliana. I don't know why people compain about the 4 turns that you have to wait to use his ability. Think about it. If you are die hard enough to buy enough packs to have this card, your deck should have this guy covered, especially for a blue deck, which is all about counters. It took a bunch of packs to have this guy and I have no problem keeping him on the field long enough for even 2 of his ultimate ability uses. Sorry if I seem a little agressive. Also you could use him in combination with Underworld Dreams. Oh yeah. If you had four of those your opponent would be gone in no time. Also use him with Liliana so you can send away all of those cards and then bring back all the creatures! If you this die hard, you could add garruk to the end of this combo, so all of your evpansive creatures that you just got from the grave can come back and have trample, and +3/3! I am probobly very biased in my decision because I read the books and not only is he my favorite character, but for two other reasons also: because he looks cool in 2 of his arts, and he is blue(my favorite color)

I love this card, and I play mono-white. Whenever I see him, I begin to focus on gathering a massive army of expendable tokens, through Even the Odds, Mobilization, and Cenn's Enlistment... then boosting them with Captain of the Watch, Rhox Pikemaster, and Field Marshal. After that, I let him build up a couple of counters, and then attack him with enough tokens that I get some through, remove a few counters, and enjoy the card draws that he gives me.
Eventaully my opponent will figure out why I've never killed him off... but until then, this card is awesome!

A good card, not a 'power planeswalker' but with it's low cost and every-turn drawing, it can get you to your better things faster, and as for your opponents, I've found that I can instantly mill most of them with a traumatize and Jace on turn 7.
Alternatively, and a strategy I find pretty badass, is to make a three or four color deck, at least one being green and one black, and throw out liliana, discard 20 from your own deck and then instantly play all of the creatures at once, including other graveyards. awesome.

Jace is a Phyrexian Arena disguised as a mill card. He's an insane draw engine. He only costs three, and after the initial investment, you're drawing two cards a turn without any additional expenditure of mana. You're almost never going to care about the ultimate.

Jace Beleren is a very good card. It is the cheapest planeswalker to get out at only 3 mana. It is harder to kill than other planewalkers because of its plus 2 ability. It is great for decking your opponent since they have to draw an extra card per turn with the possibility of losing twenty cards which is basically game once it happens. Use this card along with hedron crab, memory erosion, tome scour,Wall of Denial and cards that cancel spells, destroy attacking monsters/exile monsters and you have a deck that is almost impossible to kill before your opponent runs out of cards.

The lamest Planeswalker by far! 7 to -10 come on. Sure help me get to the cards like disintegrate in my burn deck or Oblivion Ring in my angel deck, or Crosis's Charm in my vampire deck, or Desert Twister in my elf deck, and the land to play cards like these. I rarely get mana screwed and being flooded with mana works in all my decks. I have played against him many times now and never has he bested me in a match, not even with a deck flooded with counters. Tezzeret is by far a better blue Planeswalker. Sorin is better at the mind control. I traded this fool for food. I sold the card and got some orange chicken with fried rice and egg roles.

@benlivinmusic, my guess is that you don't play very competitive magic. Yes, jace isn't a planeswalker if by planeswalker you mean a high cost permanent that takes several turns, hopes to not get destroyed, and just might get off its "ultimate" ability. Rather, he is a utility card, a permanent piece of card advantage. imagine a howling mine effect where instead of upkeep, you get to decide when you draw the extra card on your turn (but at sorcery speed). Also, your opponent only gets to draw their extra when you do, and only once every three times you do (-1, -1, +2, -1, -1, +2, etc.). For three mana, that is ridiculous. The only thing that makes jace not the most broken blue spell in standard is that the opponent can realize his importance, and try and get rid of him with attackers, burn, o-ring, etc.
Yes, he won't hit the board turn 4 like elspeth, pump out creatures and pump creatures for half a dozen turns, then make everything indestructible (what good is indestructibility when it comes around turn 10? Most games will be over). However, he is way better than your standard divination or similar draw spell, easily a 5/5.

Jace Beleren is my favorite planeswalker of all. I recently build a mill deck and its was great even though he wast in it. One day looking at my cards I saw Jace... i looked at him and thought '' Why didnt i realized how good were is ablilities before... Is he perfect for my deck". So i bought a few things that will let me search for him instead of having four Jace Belelrens in my deck. And let me say that my Deck is Far more stronger and deadly than ever before.
this killing machine keeps cards in my hand and is one card less that i have to worry about in my opponents deck, and as a matter of fact the way my deck its being build around him He rarely takes damage and hes ultimatum goes out almost every time he is in play. Not to create any enemies, but I like the color Blue a lot and i believe that the blue its getting better and stronger. oh and by the way i like the card Sleep a lot.
Blue is not dead first of all. Blue is all about manipulation, control, knowlegde, take control of creatues. Dont compare Blue with any other color, each color is unique and this is way is call Magic the Gathering.
Mind Control can gain control of Hellkite Overlord, Baneslayer and the like, while Doom Blade can only destory nonblack creatures, "in my opinion thats not enough". even though RISE FORM THE GRAVE is a great card.
Blue has counter spells and card advantege, and when i combine Blue/White or Blue/Black i get some cruel decks.
I mean Traumatize takes half your deck drain away. TELL ME WHAT OTHER CARD GETS RID OF APPROX. 24 CARDS IN THE FIFHT TURN. GIVE ME A BREAK BLUE ISNT DEAD, BLUE IS GETTING BETTER.

Great card. Worldwake's Jace, the Mind Sculptor is more powerful and with it's ability to bounce creatures, more versitile, but this guy has a more useful +2 ability, and is more dedicated to the mill/draw stratagy. Overall, I'd say the Mind Sculptor is the better of the two, though this one is still great.

He is my favorite planeswalker, he gives you extra draws which every mill deck needs, giving your opponent the 2 extra cards is just gravy 2 more cards closer to deck out, and his last ability will make it game when tripped. Though the new Jace, the Mind Sculptor is just broken, but will be so great to have on your team. This one is much more cost affective at $9.99 where the new one this week went from $29.99 to $59.99 with the lunch of worldwake. I can build a beat all mill deck for the $60 the new Jace is.

Who uses planeswalker SOLELY for its large minus ability? The whole reason planeswalkers are so dangerous is because they are incredibly flexible. Garuuk gives you a mana advantage OR more creatures. Jace, the Mind Sculptor gives you Brainstorm OR Unsummon. You can't blindly use a planeswalker's plus abilities to try to reach its final ability. Smart players will just wait until you have 7 counters on Chandra Ablaze, and then drop an Oblivion Ring or a Vampire Hexmage and take out your planeswalker. You have to consider all the possible uses of the planeswalkers. Jace Beleren is amazing for mill, and good at long-term card advantage, making him ideal for control decks and 2-Headed Giant. If you only care about playing aggressively, go look at Sarkhan Vol.
Also, on the note of 2-Headed Giant games, Jace is overpowered beyond belief, since mill decks are twice as effective in 2-Headed Giant (you only have to mill one person out to win), and he feeds your partner extra cards.

For the longest time I was vaguely irritated that this was the main blue plains-walker. Put simply, I don't like his plus ability, but to get anywhere with him you must use it. Most of my strategies are all about disarming your opponent and preventing him from getting anything. This dose exactly the opposite.
More recently though, I have changed my mind. If used as a drawing engine, he is much more powerful, and easy to see from a practical stand point. Also, he allows for some flexibility and combo potential. Put simply, he makes a better ally than a weapon.
His minus ability when paired with his plus ability allows you to draw an extra card every turn. For a player who doesn't mind sharing this benefit on every third turn, this isn't bad.
His ultimate ability seems like it could end a game, but that seems not to be his primary function, unlike some other plainswalkers. The only disadvantage to him is that he may arm your opponent. I disapprove of this personally, but I can still see his potential.

Jace is ridiculous. He can come out on turn 3, go up to 5 loyalty, and leave your opponent with the horrible choice of going for him, and wasting valuable burn/removal/attacking time (and if, they do this, don't underestimate the +2: it's card neutral and means they can waste a lot of burn trying to kill him), or accepting that you are going to be drawing through your deck at double the regular rate while they only get an extra card once every 3 turns. He just IS card advantage, and for classic blue control he feeds you the answers to threats at silly pace. Great synergy with sphinx of jwar isle, and since he almost guarantees you mana every turn, big bombs like a kicked rite of replication become easier to get to. A very, very nasty card, and that's even before his potential in mill decks, where I haven't tried him yet but the potential is obvious. Landfall too...
The Mind Sculptor is obviously a very powerful card, but he's more about direct board control , whereas Berelen is more of an obvious utility card. Jace TMS also demands a lot of intelligent play; it's far too easy just to blindly go for his ultimate, when against any competently-built deck you will struggle to get it to go off. Even worse is to make that your sole winning strategy. Jace TMS is obviously awesome, but Beleren should not be underestimated, particularly not since his casting cost is so low. Yes, it can really matter that he can get out a turn before Jace TMS. Deceptively strong in so many ways.

he is favorite planeswalker and unlike most other planeswalkers your opponents are likely to let you get his loyalty points up and try to kill him around 7-11 mark before you can use his ultimate ability. if your deck is built right they shouldn't get the chance and you can finish them of using Bone dancer, Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni or another creature with a similar ability or you can build jace up again and again untill their dead (twice is usually enough).

Do not underestimate this guy.
If you're using him efficiently, it's not his ultimate ability that you care about- it's his two other abilities that enable him to be a sustainable draw engine.
People scoff at me when I tell them that I prefer him over his Mind Sculptor counterpart in my mono-blue control deck. However, what this Jace does upon hitting the board is much more impressive than the other. Just like Jace, the Mind Sculptor, he has 3 loyalty, which means he's every bit as concerned about an untimely encounter with a Lightning Bolt. Again, just like the Mind Sculptor, he has a +2 that you can use first to put him out of Bolt range. However, this Jace's +2 is much more useful than the other one's, giving you an extra card instead of Fateseal 1 (albeit at the cost of giving your opponent one too, but that's better than having Jace die immediately to a Lightning Bolt by trying to use his -1 right away).
The other thing that I really like about this Jace is that he hits the board on turn 3 and he draws you an extra card EVERY TURN, even if you're using his + ability to keep him alive. He's very sustainable, very productive, and when put in a control deck that can appropriately abuse his draw engine abilities, he's absolutely sick and a very real threat.
Like I said, do NOT underestimate this guy just because he costs ten times less than his Worldwake counterpart.
Jace is one of my favorite planeswalkers. Instead of Jace, The Mind Sculpter, you actually need to think about how to use him. He's kind of specialized but should you use him correctly, his ablities are actually really decent. For starters, his first two abilities guarentee that you will be drawing two or more cards every turn. The first ablity provides +2, which is more than most planeswalkers. Sure, it gives your opponent an extra card, but you also might get something you need. The second ablity is also really good. For only -1, you get to draw an extra card, giving you card advantage. That means you can use the +2 ablity once for every two times you use the -1 ablity. Lastly, we have the ultimate. The ultimate goes off at a hefty -10. But since Jace gets +2, it only takes 5 turns of being unharmed to get it off. If you're keeping him in a milling/control deck, the opponent's library should be already thin. Jace's ultimate is just the topping that you need.

At first when I got this guy, I wasn't too pleased. I thought to myself, "Of all the really good mythic rares and planeswalkers, I get this useless idiot??" I didn't put him in my blue/black deck either, I just kinda let him sit with all the other blue cards in my collection. I forgot about him for a while, until my brother called me up to tell me he got Elspeth Tirel in a booster pack. At the time, we didn't really have a good white deck, but we were so excited and overjoyed that we got another planeswalker that I made a white/blue control deck. I put in Elspeth, and when I was digging around looking for cards to add in, I came across this guy. "Well, I suppose it wouldn't hurt just to throw him into this deck. I'll see how well he does." After that, when I play with that deck, I am always happy to get him out, and I love it when he's in my opening hand. The card draw he grants is amazing, and I rarely use his ultimate. Mostly it is as Eved said, -1,-1,+2. -1,-1,+2. And so on. However, don't think this guy is useless. Having one extra card than your opponent at all times is very useful. I won't rate him a 5, but he definately deserves a 4.5. (He doesn't get a 5 from me because I think his ultimate could be better.)

Also, on the note of 2-Headed Giant games, Jace is overpowered beyond belief, since mill decks are twice as effective in 2-Headed Giant (you only have to mill one person out to win), and he feeds your partner extra cards.
Base rating: ***
Cost: +*
Draw power: +*
Plus ability -*
Final: ****
he looks not too harmfull to your opponent by giving a card with his +2 ability but infact he is a deadly enemy.
Deceptively strong in so many ways.
lol i once pulled jace beleren's ultimate off twice in one game. yeah. they were THAT bad.
