Card advantage. It's that simple.

It has its uses, although it is somewhat expensive to cast.

Undead warcheif can help get him out sooner but I only use him if I need an important creature from my graveyard or as a blocker.

Too expensive for what he does. Maybe knock one mana off the cost and I'd like him. Works well in a graveyard recycling critter deck, but I always find more useful creatures to put into any other black deck I have.

Well I disagree with all of you except lectrician. He is completely right. Your paying one extra for card advantage. It might not be worth putting into all black decks but you never know, this guy has been around since the beginning and he still has his uses.

But Zulp, it's a zombie. most zombies are overcosted from what you'd expect by 1, like Scathe Zombies. I think it's just fine, esp. for card advantage in black- a color traditionally weak in this regard.

As the smart people above have pointed out, this is all about card advantage.

On paper it doesn't look like much, but it really is a good card. I have never run a midrange zombie deck without 4 of these.

For 3Black, you can play Zombify and do the digging yourself.

A touch on the expensive side, yes, but that's only because of the insane powercreep as of late. This card is perfectly fine to use by himself, and combos with plenty. Sure, he's no Zombify, but Zombify can't be, well, Zombified can it?

Now that's an absurd combo right there.
