Actually quite good for only mana. Early on, when you don't have much {R} to go around, he's not very powerful (and pumping him up is a waste of mana you could be using to get more creatures); but later on, when you don't need the mana you're able to produce, you can really pump him up.

@Tezz: I agree, the flavor text would work a lot better on a creature card with wither. Nonetheless I like this card. A good blocker against wheenie decks in the first few turns, and later on a great attacker when you have the {R} to toss at it.

Combo with Soulbright Flamekin - turn six give him (and a couple of buddies) trample, then pour your free eight into his firebreathing. An 8/2 with trample is nothing to sniff at, and in a fast red elemental deck could easily be the coup de grace.
