I don't like this card as much as its 5-star rating. Saving 5 mana in case they play something big is too much for me. I'd rather play a Control Magic on their creature during my turn despite the summoning sickness problem. Control Magic also has the downside of being vulnerable to enchantment removal, but I simply don't consider either of them to be exceptionally good.

the good thing about this card is that you can take control of a creature with protection from blue, cos protection from blue doesn't mean a spell can't be countered by blue cards. imagine the look on your oppenent's face when u counter and gaincontrol of their progenitus. priceless.

The art doesn't have jack to do with anything, but darn it if it and the effect aren't amazing.

This card is really nice. It almost garentes that you get to steal one of your opponent's cards. Also it great how this isn't limited to counter only artifacts and creatures, so if you really have to, you can counter some deadly enchantments, instants, etc. You know you wanna see this snipe Darksteel Colossus or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre.

Costs a lot but hey it is probably the funnest counterspell in the game.

Read Undermine's flavor text and then this one.

Desertion would be superb if it were four mana. As is, it's still a great idea and very fun. Besides, stealing a huge creature is always good, but this can also stop that game-winning Fireball if you need it to. A strong card, to be sure.

Yet another way to deal with Progenitus, lol

Well three Cloud Keys can give it the same cost as a Counterspell...

Love this spell, but I think it has a wrong name flavorwise. When you perform dessertion, don't you usually do it to avoid war altogether, not join the other side of the conflict? They should have called it "sudden treachery" or something similar imo.

Looks like a magic orgy is going on in the picture...
Not as an insult, or an injury; for that matter.

.......

Come to think of it, the art is great, but it also looks like what would happen if a planeswalker took acid.

This is rumored to be in Commander's Arsenal. That's a fun thought. :)

That box has a couple issues- notably not very many Mono-Colored Staples. Barely 1 for each color, when it should have tried to fit 2 for each color, and then had 5 Gold Legends, and then had 3 Artifacts.

Then pick one of those 18 cards to take out so you can put Command Tower in.

A great card. Although I wonder if it's better in general than running Treachery and cheaper counterspells, and reserving the counterspells for non-creature spells when possible.

@Sironos: Army deserters in something like a civil conflict will often join the other side. I imagine that's what this is referring to.
