Creatures don't win? Yeah, besides the fact that about 80% of all decks win through combat damage...
As for the card itself, it's decent. I'd much rather have a Mana Leak, though...

This is a very solid card. Not amazing, but solid.
While cards like cancel are more flexible in the sense that they can stop almost any spell. You should never underestimate a card like negate that only requires that you have two mana open to shut down cards like wrath of god, fireball, and traumatize.

Such cards never come close to the versatility of the famed Counterspell but I guess bluemongers have to be fed something to keep the cancellation power of blue up to level

One of those "I can't believe it didn't exist before this" cards. There are a few reasons it wasn't though, chiefly because creatures starting with Lorwyn were given a big boost creatures became more important. In the old, non-creature dominated environments of the past this would have been too strong.
Either way, they're obviously happy with the way they pulled this card off, and I agree. Good art, good playability and great flavour text - I'm not surprised it's been reprinted in the core sets so consistently since this printing.

Spells make the most difference, and turn the tides of games much more often as opposed to creature spells. So this is a good card.
