The greatest mana creature ever printed, to think that this card was created at the last moment when this art came back for Tropical Island...

Does anyone else notice that the text on the card is different in every edition? Alpha has Flying and // after it, Beta has flying at the top, Unlimited says another thing and Revised another and 4th Edition another.

Card of the Day - Friday, March 29, 2002
The Birds have been one of the staples of the game since it began, but they were created as an afterthought. Their art was originally supposed to be for Tropical Island, but the bird was too prominent. So Richard Garfield created a card just for the art, and it ended up being the most versatile mana-producing creature ever.
--Also the creature type was 'Mana Birds', modern versions are just 'Bird'

I remember thinking back in the day "That's an active volcano... that doesn't LOOK like paradise to me..."

This is a great example of a card that has pretty much stayed at a constant level of power throughout all of magic's history. Being really good but never broken in any foramt. I don't think any other card can claim that feat as much as this guy, hopefully its return to standard (curretent gone from Innistrad/Return to Ravnica) isn't too far away.
I think we should all thank Mark Poole for drawing the bird too prominent. So regarding the story how the mana birds came to be in the first place, it seems adequate to quote Bob Ross: "We don’t make mistakes here, just happy little accidents."

Will always be a staple in a lot of decks. The ability to ramp on turn one is huge and the fact that you're able to produce any color mana is just the most delicious icing on a tasty cake.
@ Ibn_Shisha Unless your opponent has 1 life with no blockers. Not strictly better.
