Not quite sure why this card has an above average rating for what is a sub-mediocre card!

It has an above-average rating because it can potentially give an ability (trample) to colors that normally do not have access to that ability, in this case {R} and {W}. Of course, there are exceptions to these general rules, in the case of red Ball Lightning, and in the case of white, Akroma, Angel of Wrath. Also the ability does not require Might Weaver to {T}, which makes it a much more versatile power sink later on in a game. Also as a 2/1 this guy can swing or block when he needs to, and his subtypes, although not the strongest in {G} the wizard subtype in nonetheless a more supported type than say, Wurm.

I don't know what's so bad about this. Got dragons and someone's chump blocking with little 1/1 flying weenies? Use this and pump up that Dragon Whelp.

Lots of combos too. Painter's Servant can essentially make this card say "2: Target creature gains trample."

His dress beneath the cloak looks too much like a fat slug coming up to chew on his beard.
tcollins is right though, not a bad card. certainly a friend of Naya

He's pretty fair for his cost, but of this cycle, trample is the weakest ability to throw on some random durdle. It doesn't mess up combat as well as extra power or flying can.
