are there 2 laquatus? well, the drawing of the other ambassador laquatus shows us another guy. :P very nice card. It is good by itself.

Looks like our Ambassador has gotten himself some plastic surgery.

I agree with the prior comments from Guest and Zulp. New artworks are something we're familiar with in Core Sets (or reprints in general), yet it's kind of strange having a completely different artwork for a legend which depicts a very specific being. I like it, but i think they should at least have made a very similar one. Even green Kamahl for instance has a strong resemblance to the red one - which on top of that kept his appearance as opposed to Laquatus in his new Tenth Edition artwork.
I have a merfolk mill deck that is just built for him. A pity he's not useful for anything else
Base: ***
Nasty Mill power: +** Semi Narrow purpose: -*
Final: ****
On an interesting side note: the other one dose not list him as a wizard. (Yes, I know that older cards should use references but I like to rely exclusively on the cards) I Guess that technically makes this version slightly better. (Although, there is just something wrong with this art, I don't know, I just don't like it)

Dude, if by "base" you mean "1/3 merfolk for 1uu" then this card should start with *. Which would leave it at ** except on a merfolk mill deck.
The problem is that you completely forgot about threshold and flashback and unearth. So that +*

By becoming a wizard, he cast spell to make himself less ugly. Obviously.
Re all the comments about how different he looks - generally I agree, it's a shame they did that. Athough Laquatas really should be quite attractive to be the charismatic devil he's meant to be, who knows what an attractive merfolk looks like?
But Wizard's has a bit of an out on him, because he's capable of shapeshifting between a swimming form (this one) and a walking form (Oddessy version). Maybe his face changes too?

Has anyone else used this with a wirewood channeller/pemmin's aura infinite mana deck? I used to have him and legacy weapon - nothing quite like removing every permanent your opponent controls from the game, then putting their entire library in the graveyard.

Ambassador Laquatus is clearly the playa in this equation.
With a name like that, I bet he gets all the ladies, mer or otherwise.

@Gelzo: "the only thing that matters is whether you're a pawn or a player".
Sure, I'd love to play a game of Magic against Laquatus one of those days =D

Flavor seems a bit off. He's not a very good ambassador if he's taking all those cards from an opponent's library without giving something in return. At least offer a non-binding contract that nobody will honor or something.

Something fishy is going on here.
