Blue's most elegant and consistent counter spell is... Counterspell. In the days of Revised, Counterspell shared countering duties with Spell Blast and Power Sink - two very good spells in their own right - but Counterspell was hands down the best. Blue mages who left two Islands untapped could often bluff their opponent into not casting important spells.

Mana drain tis better, put mana drain tis a mistake. Doesn't get much more elegant than this.
And the art is surprisingly appealing.

"Counters target spell... well after it has been cast. You and your opponent will need to figure out the resulting implications of such and retcon them on your own."

Back when this card was in every blue deck, leaving two Islands untapped was basically the same thing as a Time Walk, your opponent would either attack or just pass the turn. They didn't like walking into a Counterspell or the more strategic play was to play a decoy spell have it countered then play the Real spell. The power that blue players exerted by just having 2 untapped Islands is amazing. Yes you didn't even have to have it in your hands to make them good. Now with Cavern of Souls I really think this card should be reprinted.
