You are treating the creature as an effigy of you, and it gets to suffer in your place.
Good and cheap for its effect. If you have some crappy creatures out, you have chump blockers extraordinaire, diving in front of creatures and spells alike.

This looks more like a white spell, or even a blue spell with the flavor.
Opponent swings at you for 5, you take 5, use this, gain 5, opponent takes 5 from Sanguine Bond, target your Spitemare with this card's effect and opponent takes another 5. Give Spitemare lifelink and that's another 5 gained/5 dealt.
