Powering Drain Life requires a large supply of black mana. This means it is best played in a mono-black deck. With enough black mana at your disposal, Drain Life is easily comparable to Fireball and Disintegrate. Against other players, Drain Life can cause major life swing. And unlike Terror, Drain Life has no problem targeting black or artifact creatures. Drain Life was made even more powerful with the release of Initiates of the Ebon Hand in Fallen Empires, which let you turn any color mana black in a 1 for 1 ratio. This meant Drain Life could be combined with Channel to devastating effect.
