Fun against mono-black, if you can get it out early in the game or if you can make it unblockable.

Well by default if you're playing this against a monoblack its unblockable.

Still not sure what a dervish is or why they whirl.

"The whirling dance or Sufi whirling that is proverbially associated with Dervishes, is the practice of the Mevlevi Order in Turkey, and is part of a formal ceremony known as the Sema. The Sema is only one of the many Sufi ceremonies performed to try to reach religious ecstasy."

A dervish is something that whirls, so the name is fairly redundant.
Either that or a specific type of Muslim, from where the word comes. But that kind of goes against the setting philosophy of Magic.

By today's standards, this card is rubbish.

This thing is awesome. Unless you either chump block it early or burn it (assuming you're not the unlucky mono black player), it's going to rape some face pretty quickly.

They have a pill for that now.

This really highlights how bad power creep is... I remember this card tearing up the tournament scene back in its day. Now it's not even mediocre, it's actively bad. If this concept were reprised today, it would be a 2/3 for that casting cost, it would get 2 +1/+1 counters per hit, and it would be mythic rare.
It would also be called "Flamespin Wrackfang Dervish" or something.

Actually, it would be a 2/1, would only get one counter per hit, and would be a common red creature that has to attack every turn. Yes, power creep is a problem. But try not to overstate it.
It actually fits my casual Pestilence deck, he goes solo on the table doing his job.

Why is everyone saying this is bad nowadays? It's quite clearly freaking awesome. Protection from a relevant colour, a means of pumping itself... this thing can be left to do it's own thing.
Also, is fun for Human Tribal decks from Innistrad.

Don't think it's so safe from monoblack. mutilateinfestmassacre and the like will kill it in a jiff. Not to mention barter & chainer's
Also, foxxye's comment reminds me--here is a list of cards no one shall ever mention as potential combo material to any card, since they are exceedingly obvious and combo with everything, and if i hear them one more time im going to shoot you in the foot:
1 training grounds 2 voltaic key 3 painter's servant 4 torpor orb 5 sundial of the infinite
