There are better cards out there, but they all have restrictions such as nonland, noncreature, or low converted manacost. While this card is expensive for the effect, it is the most versatile.

It's so frustrating that the Portal 3K cards are so limited and hard to get in the US or even in English for that matter!

Well, it can discard lands. Probably the only discard that lets you directly choose lands.
