Absorb is better, anyways the effect is not that bad.
on top of that, the artwork is amazing :D

The life-gaining clause saves this card from being retarded. Good in a defensive controller.

Yeah, great artwork by Alan Pollack.

Nice, a life gain Power Sink. Nice combo of blue and white, I probably would use it if I was playing a strictly blue/white deck where it really worked as a double defensive card.

misread this, wrong a MASSIVE comment about what a crappy card it was, reread the card...

thought it read "counter target spell unless its controller pays x life"
XD

i'd prefere a hard counter most of the time, but this card isn't awful

A little like Offering to Asha.

@Mode The art also seems to be paying homage to Absorb. Slap together Power Sink and Alabaster Potion to annoy some red mages in this simple and elegant card.

Now all we need is a card called Objection so that it can be countered by this card.

Variable ColorlessWhiteBlue Overrule - Counter target spell unless its controller pays Variable Colorless. You gain X life.
3WhiteBlue Fall of the Gavel - Counter target spell. You gain 5 life.
2WhiteBlue Offering to Asha - Counter target spell unless its controller pays 4. You gain 4 life.
WhiteBlueBlue Absorb - Counter target spell. You gain 3 life.
WhiteBlue _?_?_?_ - Counter target spell unless its controller pays 2. You gain 2 life.

Some day they'll revisit Absorb as a 1WU Mana Leak, too...

Interesting. It's a bit like Syncopate but it doesn't feel as bad when you have to tap out for it. The life gain will happen regardless as well, so even if you screw up and don't have enough mana to beat your opponent mana-wise, you can still use it.
