The signets were replaced by the cluestone cycle when we returned to Ravnica probably due to how powerful the ability to produce colored mana of multiple colors at once can be, especially in limited. Being colorless, signets help fix your mana even if you aren't running the colors of the guild - this can be handy if you're splashing a powerful spell in a deck composed of other colors. Furthermore, it's also just additional mana if you're using it for that. Imagine a card like this:
Name: Blank Signet Casting Cost: Artifact , : Add to your mana pool.
