There are so many of these double-land producing cards that do damage to you if you add both when you tap...really sucks...

It's not supposed to be used as a constant source of colored mana. It's for early game speed, notice how most dual-ish lands have clauses about coming into play tapped?

It's like the Necropotence argument: Would you rather start the game with 7 cards in hand and 20 life, or 8 cards and 19? How about 8 cards and 18? If your deck is dedicated dual color or even tricolor (the strongest and most stable decks usually are two colors), getting the color of mana you need in the first 3 turns of the game is worth a lot more than the damage you'll incur from these lands.

Also, once you have your moneylands or your basics out, you can just use a painland's colorless mana for casting spells and activating abilities. Building with these in your mana base means you can't make stupid deckbuilding decisions. These lands are really all-out.
