DEFENSE! DEFENSE! The gnomes are a fine defensive tool that can help decks weak against a rush (MUC, for example) block some X/1 dudes and then gain some life back. These guys have seen some tournament play and for good reason; they aren't sexy or flashy, but they get the job done.
