I don't see how he'd be bad in standard. While the last few blocks haven't favored multi-colored, a year ago he'd have rocked house in Naya or Jund. They still need good 1 drops and while Wild Nacatl is good, this guy is much easier to use and far better in jund, especially with fetchlands being so common.
I think the whole "standard creatures are obscenely overpowered" schtik is getting old. Some of them are ridiculous, but for the most part creatures who were awesome before are well.. still pretty awesome most of the time. While the general quality has gone up, especially on mythics, the quality of awesome stuff is usually still just about the same level of awesome.
For instance, Phyrexian Obliterator is still not as good as Phyrexian Negator for an an all-out suicide black deck (though... you may as well run both..) because it'll take two dark rituals to work, and at that point you can probably find a 5 cost black creature who's better at whatever you're trying to do.
