Most drain life effects require only black mana to pay for the x, so this has some flexibility. And it is an arcane that actually does something, so that's fun.

I was about to say it seemed like a strictly better Consume Spirit as it didn't have the "only black mana" clause... then noticed it was only for creatures. Le sigh.
