Which is it, winning is the same as not losing, or not losing is the same as your opponent not winning?

I love how the flavour text is a joke about how actual Magic players react when any sort of change happens, screaming that everything was better in the old days, before Wizards performed market research and had pretty much no experience with designing the game.
