Powerful card in a ante format, but useless otherwise...I do love the art...

Along with his 4x Darkpact, my friend used four of these as well in the Alpha/Beta days. He'd only play these if he was winning, but some games, thanks to the combo of Darkpact and the Attorney, he would walk away with 3-4 of your cards (the best ones had been taken before even winning of course). Evil combination.

Giving it 0.5 because ante is a stupid concept and I ended up getting 3 of these from boosters.

Ante is awesome, it takes balls. You're just mad cuz you had your cards taken away, loser.

"If opponent doesn't concede the game immediately," really says a lot about this card.

I hate trolls who think they are hot sh*t because they play for ante and put others down for disliking it. It's extremely disingenuous and not sportsmanlike at all.

Ante is a bad concept. It completely eliminates casual play and turns every game into a fear fest because you might lose your cards. It is supposed to add excitement and suspense to the game because you might win a card, but I don't find stealing peoples cards much fun at all, especially if it was a close match or a really good game. Makes me feel wrong inside. It also discourages new or unskilled players from playing because they know they will probably lose. Even if they don't care if they lose because they just like to play the game, ante will make them care because something is at stake. Also, ante benefits all those arrogant rich kids who have the money to buy 300 booster packs and get all those Black Lotuses. Ante makes playing for fun impossible. Magic should be a casual, fun game that anyone can play. Magic is not poker.

IMO, ante is a terrible rule, but if you play with ante, this card can be good. It is situational in regards that you will only play it if you are winning, and it will either outright win you the game (from your opponent conceding) or you can win an extra card, in the rare exception this backfires on you and you wind up losing. This also, more times than not, just makes your opponent hate you even more than they already do. This is also very black to me.

The problem is that a card like this doesn't actually do anything to help you win the game. It changes nothing about the player's states. It would be much better to run a Terror instead most of the time.

Even though I hate ante, I will rate purely on objective usefulness of the card. I give it a 1/5, since it is situational (as you must already be winning for it to be practical) and will waste a card slot if you are losing. I like all my cards to be useful whether I'm winning or not.

Ante is not stupid. It does take some chutzpah to play with Ante.

The reasons for it and against It are pretty much obvious. If you want to hold a special event that you organize by personally contacting 8 people who in a dusty room with bad lighting all agree to everything.....

"Saloon Magic" actually sounds REALLY fun and kinda scary for high-level play. Imagine winning would score you not just a intangible 'player score', but a REAL CARD :O

iMO, casual players should NEVER feel shanghaied or obligated to play ante, "Accessibility" is Very Important, and even in "Professional" League play, there should be non-Ante circuits to make sure people can find the level of competitiveness they are comfortable with...

However, I think that it would be REALLY, Freaking, COOL, if for certain very-high-profile events, the Top Eights, Semi-Finals, and Finals of the highest level events, yes I would happy if they brought Ante back to a CERTAIN part of the game. Maybe even only use it in Legacy and Vintage, but...SOMEwhere I'd like to be able to see some real Showdowns with Epic Stakes.

It IS NOT for everyone...but if Ante was returned to Legacy and Vintage events, then we could Unban all the Ante cards (except Contract from Below, obvz), and then Restrict the two Black cards that directly reference the Ante....

well, I think there is some merit to this. It's not like I'd ever advocate Ante at FNM :P
