Yes, X can be 0, but unless I am missing the point, why would you want to? You still have to pay 1 colorless per damage prevented, so I don't see the point.

@Bbone37: Cause if X is 0 then you know how much mana to spend on preventing damage and how much you have left for other spells. It's a pretty decent card this. Tones of possibilities.
