Clearly no where near as good as its Rend Flesh counter part but considering that there are number of spirit cards in magic this spell could always go in a side deck, or not.

Rend Spirit is certainly only worth using on block constructed while Rend Flesh does a better job most of the time in general. Both of them are somewhat useful with cards like Imagecrafter to ensure their use.
Although i don't quite get how someone is supposed to rend a spirit...well, regarding the flavor text i guess Kamigawa's kamis are somewhat different from the common spirits.

wow this is one of the worst cards I have ever seen even when facing spirits it is weaker then a good chunk of the non anti kill spells.

I think you guys are being too hard on this card. Sure, it may be extremely narrow and unplayable 99% of the time, but it can be a decent sideboard card if a lot of people are running Spirits for some reason.
Clearly, this was printed in Kamigawa which has TONS of Spirit cards, so at the time it was printed it was totally useful. WOTC is always making cards that are relevant to the set they come out in and may have little/no use outside of that set but make perfect sense in it. I wouldn't be surprised if they re-printed Rend Spirit in Innistrad with all the Spirit cards coming.

I think the most depressing thing about this card is the fact that it isn't even Arcane, whilst Rend Flesh IS. Since no-one really runs 'protection from Arcane' stuff it's only ever really a bonus for if you're splicing some other fun things onto it.
I know most people don't even care about Splice onto Arcane, but the fact that this card doesn't even have that when its counterpart does is just another slap in the face.

@Psychichobo : Arcane is on spells the Kami use, which originate from their strange realm, so it would be on the non-spirit hate spell. It thematically doesn't make sense here. That said, yes it does hurt.
In block it did its job. Its sad that it has been blown out of the water by a white card with Urgent Exorcism. White has gotten too good at killing of late. Poor Rend Spirit, always the black sheep of the family, never living up to his brother's legacy, and now with a little sister who always seems to show him up.
