The ability is a bit expensive as it requires two mana to be held open, but has real potential in combat shenanigans.

This seems like it would be really unpleasant to attack into.

When Weatherlight came out, if you used his ability after you declared him as a blocker, he didn't deal combat damage because there was a rule that prevented combat damage from tapped blocked creatures. The removal of that rule made him slightly better, even if only against creatures with one toughness. (And it did screw Master of Arms's ability.)
