pretty good the 2/3 makes a much bigger difference than you think. It would be a lot easier to stop if it was a 2/2.

i prefer a 2/2 Shimian Specter which is in exchange able to Extirpate your opponents hand instead,
or having a Hypnotic Specter being a 2/2 three-drop that doesn't let your opponent decide which card he or she discards, though.

The 7th Edition artwork was a little better and more darker. Again the Hypnotic Specter still beats this one.

Since Bolt came back, 3 toughness has gotten weaker. As Mode said, Shimian is better.

To gaze under its hood is to bring disappointment it's not a hypnotic specter

Decent, flying is always good, I've found, and triggered combat damage abilities are always awesome with flying creatures.

The solidity of playing ability and flavor make this a perfect part of the core set. The flying and 3 toughness make it understandable in ability. The flavor is interesting as well: when you gaze under its hood as it flies at you, you are so mortified by his face that you forget what you were about to cast . . .

Actually, it is better to play Guul Draz Specter if you wanna be aggro or Shimian Specter if you wanna be control.

But, if you are a casual player or are in a budget it's ok to play the Abyssal.

It's a pretty big nerf over Hypnotic Specter. One mana make a huge difference with discard, because you need to start making your opponent discard as fast as possible, before they have a chance to bring out their key cards; and the difference between a random discard and a chosen discard is also huge.

But it's still a very good and usable card, which just shows how overpowered Hypnotic Specter was.

When I rate the cards I have in mind that Hypnotic Specter is rare, and Abysal Specter as an uncommon. For most of you this probably doesn't have a sense, but I think it's not fair to compare rare with common/uncommon. Nowadays you may have almost every card, but can you imagine If rare was really "rare", then for one additional mana plus +1 toughness.........
