This was the second card I ever got, and boy is it great! A 5/3 is nothing special, but a 5/anything with regeneration hits hard and is tricky to deal with. This makes it a good creature once you play it, but it's a bit pricey. The swampcycling, thus, is what really makes this card. You can get a swamp now, and reanimate it later. If you return it to your hand later instead of straight to the battlefield, you can swampcycle it again! Great in many ways. Almost forgot; great art too.
Two reprints say that Wizards agrees with me on this card's excellence.

I like cycling it and then bring it back with cheap revival spell. Its better at blocking than attacking though, simply because of regeneration.

This card is an example of how much an artist such as Daren Bader can give to a Magic card and to Magic in general.
Probably the best of the landcycling creatures from this set. I use this card to this day.

Ah! I didn't comment on this printing! How suitable I comment on this one with great news: I recently won some legacy games off of this guy's back. The swampcycling helps mana fix (dual lands) and ensure early lands in a deck that only runs 21-22, and the giant ass means he is a big pain for the opponent.
He unfortunately was dropped for now; but his wins against decks running Goyf and Batterskull show she's still relevant due to his versatility and requiring an exile-answer or a sac effect. Ran him next to Eternal Witness for easy recursion and lots of other guys who ramp/grab lands.
My opponent was not happy about losing to a Scourge Common; but I was ecstatic to see such a cheap ($0.25 or so) creature help *make* my deck. Amazing :)

The best card of an amazing cycle. A 5/3 regenerator for six in black isn't even that overcosted. The only comparable card is Laquatus's Champion.
