From befor WotC started upping the power of lifegain. 8 life for 5 used to be pretty good, not so much now.

Five for eight was the most you could expect from a card, but straight lifegain was never good.

I love watching new players drool over life gain. I always have a secret laugh because someday they will think the same thing about a new player over valuing life gain.

Lifegain is situational. You need board position + low health for it to matter. The best kind of lifegain is when its tacked on as an extra, not the main feature.
