Linvala costs double what the Totem does, and she requires white mana. Also, she's more fragile as a creature. There's really not the case of one card invalidating the other.

Living Plane does not apply. It's abilities requiring mana. Tapping does not require mana, so tapping lands for mana does not apply.

@asandberge This would work with Living Plane. Activation costs include tapping. Cursed totem is not restricted to activated abilities that require mana, just activated abilities. In addition, the rulings on the Details page of this card shows that mana abilities are affected as well.
