Pretty average, but it's got a weird juxtaposition of abilities.

I suppose it's about average, but it can be extremely tough to kill.

this is a decent card to throw in there when you're playing against friends. the first strike made it a little more useful than drudge skeletons. plus, the high cost was pretty much negligible what with how fast black was during the time period when this came out. dark ritual made everything so easy.

Yes, but first strike & regeneration don't go well together.

Actually First Strike and Regen go well together offensively. This is because in order to get at this guys health to make him regen you have to sac 2 toughness worth of guys (sometimes that doesn't matter but..), so it takes 3 tokens to block and then do lethal damage, but then you can regen. Also, it's good for dueling other first strike creatures you may have problems with. Because it's uncommon to have these two abilities together that makes this card all the better IMO.

Sanguine Guard
I'll just leave this here.

Identical to Sanguine Guard in abilities, with only tribal differences

If you are running heavy black and have no need for tribal, this can replace your Drudge Skeletons for some offense power

First strike and regenerate on the same creature is a strange combo indeed. I'm willing to say that it makes the creature more powerful. Especially considering there are more expensive creatures with worse abilities.

Badass skeleton art. First strike and regeneration is pretty redundant, though.
