Maybe more unweildy to read, but in fact it's a bit better than that. You could call it "first fight": The damage doesn't happen simultaneously - your creature gets to hit first. And if it hits in a special way (e.g. with wither or death touch), it can alter the outcome from the targeted creature (like dealing less/no damage). Also see the rulings of Karplusan Yeti, which works the same way.
