One of the worst red burn spells in the game. Sorcery, and it cannot target players, AND it has to be a nonred creature, AND it is uncommon!!! I guess this might have been decent in limited/block constructed.

because white doesn't normally get burns, so for it to get a "decent" burn (1 mana for 3 damage is pretty good, red mages are spoiled because of lightning bolt) makes sunlance a decent card that can catch people off guard.

I dig the flavor text on this one.

Improved in ROE as Flame Slash. Increased damage and no stupid color restriction.

Of course when it's white it gets a better rating; there are much better burn spells in red than this, there aren't in white.

(To target nonred creature) "Oh..target creature or player would be better."

(Sorcery) "oh... assumed it was instant speed."

(Uncommon.) That makes sense wouldn't want too many of these overpowered cards appearing in limited.

But in all seriousness, wtf? Lightning Bolt is strictly better in almost every way...

I love how they turn this card white and it gets a better rating. Sunlance

Right, because white really needed a cmc (creature only) burn spell. It's not like white has a bunch of cmc removal. Changing a cards color only makes it better if the color you're changing it to lacks cards that can fulfill a similar role. Making Sea Eagle still wouldn't make it a good card.

Lightning Bolt has never had artwork or flavor text this awesome. And the Gerrard Solo of it all makes this card a solid 4/5.

Why was this gem of a flavor text wasted on this trash

This is removal that I'd be pleased to find in my sealed or pick in draft at some point. That is all it is. And yes, Sunlance is a better card because it does have a niche that isn't just 1 cost removal. That is a removal spell for that doesn't give a land or life while still having further restrictions to your opponent. I'm not sure that it is good enough for that niche use to justify its play that much in say Modern, but it isn't as if there is no reason to. I'd probably play Sunlanceover Oustin the decks that would consider forgoing Path to Exile. Meanwhile a card like this is facing a strictly better card and that card may well be the best Magic card until you hit Vintage. The improved version has done about as much in Modern as Sunlance has.
