I'm willing to bet that if this were for whatever reason printed (first time, mind you) in one of the newer sets, the cost would be closer to {W}{W}{1}; double color for the Protection, and the {1} for Flying.

@LateralisOne: You could be right, but it would be {1}{W} for it being a 2/2 and {W} for the protection; current sets don't usually add to the mana cost for flying on creatures that are higher than common.
