And is Exile supposed to be the card that he emulates?

No it's an over priced swords sorta thing, notice that the opponent gains the life, not all the spellshapers copied spells that existed.

Hm, after some look at it, it seems to be more of a combo from both StP and Exile, although when the creature first came out developers said this be replicating Exile, not StP.

I like a repeatable Swords to Plowshares. I'll take 4. And run Training Grounds to make it easier to play with.

Well since he's a spellshaper with repeatable removal you should think he's pretty solid, but he combines the two less appealing aspects of Exile and Swords to Plowshares - the restriction to attaking creatures and the lifegain to your opponent. I'm glad they removed the nonwhite restriction at least.
But it's still an incredibly slow card. Two mana for a 1/1, then your opponent gets time until his next turn but one to get rid of it, which isn't too hard in the case of such a tiny creature.
And even if you get to activate his ability, it still doesn't help you against aggro that much when you don't get the life and instead fuel your opponent with it, especially since you can't build yourself up when you have to pay three mana and discard a card for his ability each turn.
This might have been a good choice in limited, but is barely useful in constructed.

I want this guy for EDH. I mean look, everyone he "exiles" he's actually just RIPPING TO PIECES.

Note: It's even more brutal than that. He's not just ripping the creatures apart. He's ripping them apart and then feeding them to their owner.

I use him in my recursion deck. Puts a card in my graveyard and removes a creature from the game. Plus having this on the field may change how your opponent plays; even if you don't intend on using his ability.
