Interesting card! The lancer's ability reads sort of like "Protection from Creatures", except that it is weaker. In actual fact, there are precious few cards in the game that actually have pro: creatures:
Now, for a card coming from a Starter set, this is probably a better choice than the protection option, because this is easier to understand... but it would be interesting to see how the CMC would change on this creature if they were to print a Protection from Creatures updated version.
Also, random other fact: it looks like this card's art is actually half of a larger painting! See Dakmor Lancer.
