I don't really see what is so awkward with the wording. You pick an enchantment or artifact and it is destroyed (removed from the field of play/no longer active) and discarded implies it should be placed in the graveyard...

@Thoragh Except Magic has very explicit rules, and the current rules define "discard" as exactly "move from your hand to the graveyard". Nothing on the battlefield can be discarded. So the old language is indeed very awkward under the current rules.
