An interesting land during the time of Fallen Empires, could be used to give you a little oomph in the mana department.
Certainly out-dated now days. It's closest equivalent is probably Hickory Woodlot, a bit more effective in the short run.

Lame. Why should it come into play tapped? It's cards like these that gave Fallen Empires a bad reputation.

Lands like these are an obvious trade-off, and whether or not it is useful for you should be determined by your personal play preferences.
But there's one problem: they're non-basic, which is almost always a liability, and limits synergy with other cards. Yet you could also argue that they prevent landwalk, so... Whatever. Take it if you like it.

It can easily give you 3 mana on turn 2, so it's always worth considering.

It comes into play tapped because if it didn't, you could have two mana turn one. That's not a good thing.

4/5 in it's time, 3/5 because of green's mana ramp. THe W, U, B versions are ridiculous though.
