Looks phyrexian to me. Didn't know they hired themselves out though...

Looking at this now, it's not hard to understand why Rebels outclassed Mercenaries, even back in the day. While Rebels searched up, Mercenaries searched down - wherein lay the problem. Without Dark Ritual and its ilk, it's hard to get the bigger Mercenaries into play in the first place, in order to look for their minions. With Rebels, the flow of the game dictates that the longer it goes, the more mana you have available. This made grabbing Jhovall Queen possible, and even without the amazing Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero, you could raise a pretty staunch army that adapted to the changing board. Grabbing a 2/2 Mercenaries, however, would not necessarily help much on turn 7.

@Equinox523: Weirdly enough, I think that the mercenaries could have had a chance if they'd not had to tap to activate their search ability. It wouldn't be too broken because they'd still pay mana to do it, but you could get out some of the weaker ones (Cateran Persuader) and search out the cheapest creatures very quickly. The Rebels would have been able to slowly build up, the mercenaries would have been able to quickly spam weak creatures. The end result would be that Rebels would get big quickly, and Mercenaries would get meatshields quickly. I think that'd be kind of neat.
As it is though, there's no point to playing a large creature then searching up a smaller one.

"Creature - Mercenary"
Yes, that's his job. But what is he?
