This isn't exactly mythic status, coyotemoon. It was a special, promo set distributed for a limited time; all the cards in that mini set had the exact same symbol.

if you start with a Stomping Groun or even better a Taiga, then you get a 2/3 on turn one. in a tournament style deck where speed is everything. this card is killer.

Obviously, it got promoted because apes are so cool. I mean, that's the first thought we all had when we saw this... right?
Unlike what many others have said, Kird Ape is not restricted or banned or anything. It is completely legal. It got promoted to mythic because it used to be banned, then they changed their minds. By being a famous banned card, and becoming completely legal, it was reprinted as a mythic in From the Vaults. If they ever reprint this card in a normal set, it would not be mythic, probably an uncommon.

One of the best cards in a red/green speed kill deck.. Dont forget to use Fastbond, Sprites, Giant Growth, Bloodlust and Lighting bolts and for added flavour Howling Mines... he he Dead!!

This card isn't Mythic for its actual power level. It's Mythic because it's in this special "From the Vault: Exiled" set; and it's in this set because of what it was - and what people thought it was - back in its heyday.
As its flavor text says - context is everything. ;)

It's funny how loopholes make simple, nice, reasonable, good uncommons into mythic rares in a pinch. I just wish they had printed Storm Crow.

I enjoy this artwork from Terese Nielsen, but this is a vault set. Every card should get new art in these sets.
