Not all that spectacular, but the flexible power/toughness trade can be useful at certain times.

This should be rated higher. 9 total power/toughness for 5 mana was normal back then, and for one mana this becomes a 3/9, able to block even today's ridiculously fat green creatures. If you can keep it safe from removal (such as with Shielding Plax), this is basically an invincible blocker.

it's +1/-2, not +1/+2 it becomes 3/5 if you want it to.

The art and flavor of this card are really cool. This is the sort of feel Innistrad is striving for, I believe. While this ability is no longer a green one, it was an important card in teaching me about combat timing when I first started playing Magic (also, it was one of the toughest creatures I had access to at the time). I occasionally still find a singleton spot for it for old times' sake. ^_^

Believe it or not, this card sucked back then, too.
