Can someone clear up these avatar card thingies, 'cuz I've never heard of them.

@DefenderOfSavagery: they are for the vanguard-format, where players add such an avatar to their deck and get it's effect throughout the game. The players were not interested. Later then, wotc gave the format another try on the digital version of magic (magic online), since players were using avatars anyway as profile pictures. So they simply slapped abilities on those avatars, made them collectible, handed them out as additional prizes on tournaments etc. But the format wasn't online not much more successful, so from early 2010 on they stopped giving abilities to avatars. The only vanguard format that actually matters is "momir basic" on magic online.
