Uhggg.....I really hate when cool art work and flavor text is wasted on such a mediocre card. If it had a second mechanic that was tied in with the devour then it might actually be useful. But it doesn't and the stone cold truth is that this card will never see regular gameplay. How unfortunate for the vicious art work.

I think this card is great, I guess it depends on your deck, for me i use it with sarpadians emipres, vol. VII so I am producing a punch of lil nothing creatures and if I sacrafise them for him, I have me a pretty big card

how is this card bad?
In a devour deck, which i happen to own and pwn
its a 5/5 that pays for itself if you need to drop it from your hand, be a beefy blocker for a turn
and if it lasts become fodder for a better devour creature such as mycoloth/predator dragon

but if you've played your mycoloth
or have just killed a sprouting thrinax
you've got a 5 to cast 8/8 or higher
i see no problem

also insane art :P

Well 5/5 For Five Mana Is Never Bad(NEVER) And Devour 1 Is Pretty Trivial But Hey Why Not And I Agree The Art Is Great Parente Is Real Good

A 5/5 for 5 which pumps for sacrificing tokens. Not as good as any Devour 2s, but a decent card.

um, i think the most people missed the fact that this guy is a common, sure there are better devour cards, but this is quite good for something that is so easy to pick up

At worst, this guy is a 5/5 for cmc5, which as others have stated is not bad under any circumstance. The RG manacost is by no means intensive; if you're up to 5 mana without one of those two colors in a RG or Jund deck you're already losing horribly anyway .

Secondly, Devour 1 isn't anything special, but unlike all the other Devour creatures, this guy doesn't need to devour anything to be big. His big already, with the pleasant option of making him bigger should you have a creature that's been hit with pacifism or a Sprouting Thrinax you need to pop so that the fancier devour creatures have some saprolings to dine on.

Also, props for the brutal artwork. This guy goes into my non-tournament decks without a second thought, and is one of the last cuts when I do take Jund out to the serious grounds.

@ Master Of Etherium

Well you are right that a 5/5 for 5 mana isn't bad, but the fact that it requires both green and red mana to play instead of just green makes it feel like it could have used Devour 2 instead of Devour 1 and still have been very balanced.

It is not a bad card, but as far as a 5 drops go its no demigod of revenge.

Needs more abilities.

I think it's pretty good actually also. 5/5 for 5 is already decent, and it has devour?? This could fill a creature slot in a devour sap deck. Or an Aggro burn deck. Not a bad choice, could do waaay worse.

Great card, well rounded and solid. I recently made a basic red/green beatdown deck to teach a friend how to play and I threw two of these guys in there. Back when I started my friends gave me Craw Wurms in a similar deck.

'Gorge'ous art. Mediocre card.

Competitively speaking, he really isn't much to speak of, but as a card in general, there really isn't anything bad to say about it. I think mediocre is a bit harsh; it's no Battering Wurm.

Just had a Symbiotic Wurm killed? Well here you go, now you have a 12/12 wurm.

A minimum 5/5 with no drawbacks for 5 CMC, at common, rated 3/5. Seriously?

@Laguz: That's three words. Count'em.

@MasterOfEtherium: You said something that relates! Maybe there's hope for you yet.

Anyway, much better card than people give it credit for; probably deserved uncommon.

And, as people have said, good art.

You greedy bastards. 5/5 for 5 is fair, especially at common. The ability to sac creatures to make it bigger is just icing on the perfectly delicious, if somewhat plain, cake.

You guys are bitching about icing. Stop it. Just stop it.

How would Gorger Wurm's Devour 1 ability react to Shambilng Shell's ability? (Shambling Shell has: "Sacrifice Shambling Shell: Put a 1+/1+ counter on target creature.") Does Shambling Shell sacrifice itself or does it require a separate ability to sacrifice it?
