after you eat 1/3 of the chips you should probably have this card 1/3 of the time unless 1/3 or more of the players have 1/3 of your deck.

Ran in some Necro decks during Ice Age because they could control their life total at will, as well as temporarily exile cards which would not get counted by the Pox. But there are undoubtedly better options now that we have about 20 times as many cards as back then.

this used to run in an old early game winning deck with nicol bolas reanimator decks running the rack. get 2 racks, a hit with nicol bolas just after getting poxed... thats game.

pretty cool card, its kinda like black's version of balance, though not as broken. i think i want to use this or smallpox in my reanimator deck
@ krptnyt: That's not true because the poxes would not resolve at the same time and one third of infinite is still infinite.. so you'd take one third of infinte, leaving infinite life, and then u could go on doing that as many times as u'd like without making any progress

if someone claims infinite life, they can still go down to 0 with 3 of these.

According to Magic's compreshensive rules you cannot claim infinte life you must choose a number.

If played without care, you probably lose more since you expended a card to run it.
The things hit (life, cards, creatures, lands) don't include artifacts and enchantments. Aim to use it when you have multiples of three (like three swamps) of the sacrifices, and when your opponent does not.
Turn three swamp/pox followed by turn four swamp/pox is a brutal, griefer move. The players are probably at 9 life or less.

if someone had infinite life, then after 3 of these they still would have infinite life. 2/3 of infinity would always be infinity, and you could never get to 0 by reducing a percentage of the total unless that percent was 100. If you subtracted 99999999999999999 from infinity, the total would still be infinity. Which leaves the question how could subtracting 1/3 of infinity from infinity = infinity? There is no way to comprehend the number infinity with the human mind. Imagine if i tried to actually write all the numbers down. The 9999999999999999 would keep going off the edge of your computer screen and circle the entire planet. That would be far to large to understand or count, but those 99999999's would keep going past the edge of the universe. Now our galaxy is 100 million light years across, with 100 billion stars in it. their is 100 billion estimated known galaxy's. To put this in perspective, the furthest mankind has ever traveled in space since the dawn of man, 9.7 billion miles from our sun. We are just now barley leaving our solar system, an nowhere near the closest star. But if you were to zoom out on a picture of the entire universe, eventually the picture would become very dark and the entire universe would look like a star. This must be the case, unless you are claiming that our universe has no edge, meaning it has no beginning and no end. In this way, our universe is both infinitely big and infinitely small depending on perspective. To us its infinitely big, but with this logic in reality its actually just infinitely small.

How did this all come from nothing? God is the only logical answer, unless you think spontaneous generation makes sense.

No, atemu1234, if your opponent had 0 cards in hand, it would not be dividing by zero. You discard 1/3 of the cards in your hand, so it would be 0/3 = 0 cards discarded.

And anyway in most decks Pox and Smallpox will generally be far superior to Death Cloud since you get more bang for your mana in the earlygame and midgame, which is where pox effects really hurt your opponent the most (hence the mono-B pox deck mantra, "Pox Early, Pox Often, Pox Hard").

@WrathOfShane

Infinity isn't a number, it's a value. And I won't even get started on the rest of that...

On the card:

Between this, Smallpox, and Death Cloud, you have a lot of options. With smallpox and cloud, you want to just straight up have more stuff than the other guy, or otherwise be unaffected by it, where as with this, you try to get advantage out of abusing the rounding. You pox when they have 4 lands and you have three. Then you play a land, of course. You pox when they take 1 more life loss than you, discard one more card, or sac one more creature. In this way, pox can actually hurt your opponent more than you from all angles of attack, and get you ahead in the game. On the other hand, smallpox can get them while they're behind, and cloud can actually reset the board completely. Really, I love all three.
