Would be better if it only cost one mana to use his ability. As it is, even if you enchant him with Eland Umbra or something similar, that would be 8 damage for 16 mana; players would rage at any card with that effect.
Could be useful versus weenie decks, but seeing as how you're only likely to use his ability once per turn, you may as well just go with a Cunning Sparkmage for one mana less.
