Looks more like a duck pond then any swamp I ever seen almost like there should be some gentle woodland creatures depicted here not really the dark brooding sense of evil I expect from a black mana land

I don't think a lot of Magic players have ever been to a swamp, there are certainly places in Southern Mexico that look like this. I've also largely given up on telling people about the whole 'black does not equal evil' thing. Maybe New Phyrexia will just equate all five colors with evil, evening things out.
