Wicked card. If you're already losing, what do you have to lose? :O This could save you arse. Wouldn't play it myself though but I can see some decks playing this weird one.

this card was utilized very efficiently in a deck called Prosperous Bloom

I really love this type of card. Gets you right back into the game while you're about to run out of gas when playing mono-black.

I can't tell if this would be considered good today or not. I'm not disputing that the effect of drawing four cards is great- that's just amazing- but 3 colored mana and half your life? Would that see standard, or are the cards they make today not powerful enough in their interactions to make it worth it? (I.E. are the combos degenerate enough?) Also it is sorcery speed, though that would matter much much less if it's mana cost were less prohibitive.
Interesting card, but for 3 black mana I'd rather run Necropotence. 3.5 stars because being good then does not always mean would be broken today....

Drive the math geek in your family crazy by insisting that -5/2 = 0, directing them to this page during the ensuing argument, and pointing to the rulings.
If you attempt to halve a negative life total, you halve 0.
(Confession: I'm a math geek, and winced at this for like ten seconds, even though I know which rule it's clarifying...)

I spy with my little eye something that is painfully advantageous!

Combine with Phyrexian Unlife or Lich, which both only go off when you're dealt damage, not just when you lose life.

This card is used to great effect in a deck called Spanish Inquisition. The deck is known for consistently comboing out for a turn 1 Kill. At its core, the deck is a storm deck. But it manages to combo out so early mostly due to the presence of this card, along with it's functionally identical ancestor, Cruel Bargain.

I give it four stars just because of how wonderfully black it is.
