I actually don't hate the blue or the red version of these cards (especially the red one) and have played them in silly multiplayer decks and whatnot. But doesn't white gain enough life in great ways (like Soul Warden) that this card just seems like a poor choice for any kind of constructed deck?

I wouldn't necessarily use it in a white deck, but probably sideboard it to play against a white deck. That makes more sense to me. I think that's what it was intended for, otherwise it would have been another white spell instead of a colorless artifact.
