It needed a homage. This is one of the best auras ever printed.
There's nothing like having a creature left after your opponent clears the board. Also, the phantom mechanic debuted in the same set, and any sort of additional permanent toughness made them completely invulnerable to damage. See Phantom Centaur or Phantom Nishoba.
I used to love putting these things on penumbra creatures, like penumbra bobcat, it would always make me giggled when my 5/4 bobcat rolled over, turned black, and popped out a 3/3 elephant.
