In its day, at the common rarity, many thought Grizzly Bears were undercosted. The vanilla 2/2's in the other colors (Gray Ogre, Pearled Unicorn, Scathe Zombies) all had a converted mana cost of 3. But green was known for having better-than-average creatures, and the Grizzlies delivered.

One of the first creatures I ever cast. Just good, plain old Grizzly Bears like we have on Earth. They told me I was a noob (not that that term existed in 1994) who was not ready to throw dragons and demons around. But they were exciting to send into battle, even if I didn't understand combat math.
I will never accept Runeclaw Bear as a replacement. Grizzlies represent the simplest of creatures for beginners to enter into the game with. Flavor-wise, that is much more important than some nondes.cript magical claws.

Classic, it was my second favorite creature when I started. First was Thorn Elemental.
