A built in Castle effect. This sort of thing would probably be more practical in blue, what with it's defensive nature and various untap effects. Slap Vigilance on this guy, and you've got a pretty solid defense though.

These guys are underwhelming, for sure. But in my experience of casual multiplayer, a 3/5 with either flying or reach is just what you need to keep people off your back without drawing any hate. In that kind of environment no one is going to want to waste removal on it, but it's too tough to just get incidentally smacked down.
In multiplayer there is an art to not sticking your neck out. I think these guys to a pretty solid job without scaring anyone.
